The need for hospice care has always been present in the community, but until the early eighties, many individuals anticipated the end of life without the promise of dignity, comfort, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. In July of 1981, all of that began to change for Genesee County and surrounding areas. It was at that time that our organization was founded under the name of Hospice of Fenton Area by Carol Sinclair, RN. Although our name and location have changed over time, our original goal of providing exceptional care for those with a limited life expectancy has remained steadfast.
Within a few years, of the organization's founding, the name was changed to Hospice for Communities, and the facility moved from Fenton, Michigan to Flint. On February 2, 1996, the agency again changed its name, this time to Community Home Health & Hospice.
After becoming licensed by Medicare in 1997, Community Home Health & Hospice began offering home health services.
In October of 2000, we opened our current building on Stone Bridge Drive, which houses our offices and residence facility. We continue to strive to enhance the hospice residence by adding additional services to our patients/residents, creating scenic landscape features, and looking toward the expansion of the site.
In January of 2003, the decision was made to discontinue home health rehabilitation services in order to intensify our focus on providing hospice services that include palliative care. These services continued to evolve, and in 2004, we changed our name to Avalon Hospice. At this time, we continue to proudly serve Genesee and surrounding counties through delivering the best end of life care available.
