What is
the time commitment for volunteers?
Because our services are available 24
hours, we can use volunteer help any
time of the day, which makes us a more
flexible place to volunteer for those
with hectic schedules. We do require a
minimum of four hours once a week Your
time is a gift to us, and we want to
work around your availability.
What kinds of things do volunteers do?
We currently have needs for volunteers
in the following areas:
Hospice patient sitter – relieve primary
caregivers by providing companion,
assistance with a meal, light
housekeeping, or personal care for
patients, or just “being there”, for up
to four hours once a week
Hospice Residence Aide –Provide
assistance feeding patients,
companionship, participate in patient
social activities, and complete
gardening activities.
Bereavement Volunteer – provide
supportive telephone contact or visits
to assist bereaved individuals in
talking about their loss and coping with
the grief process.
Camp Counselors – Camp Braveheart is a
family-focused weekend camp for children
and teens who have experienced the death
of a loved one. Traditional fun is
combined with special activities
designed to teach coping skills, honor
memories, and offer friendships with
others who have had similar losses.
Social Workers, Teachers, Counselors,
Human Services students, needed.
Specialized training will be provided in
the weeks before camp.
Military Vets – Share experiences and
stories with terminally ill war
veterans, because of the common
connection, it is easier for a veteran
to open up and share with a fellow
veteran. Enrich someone’s life visiting
once a week.
Nightingale – Provide spiritual and
emotional support to patient/families
during the active dying process,
offering a tremendous gift; your time,
presence and comfort. As one vigil
volunteer so aptly expressed, “no one
should die alone”.
Share a Talent – If you have a special
talent that would benefit out
patients/residents (cosmetology, musical
abilities, etc,) we would love to
incorporate your gifts into our
programming.

STORIES FROM VOLUNTEERS:
"I heard about Avalon Hospice through an assisted living center where my husband was staying. I wasn't happy with the kind of care he was getting there, so imagine how I felt when he got to come to this wonderful place! I have several positive memories of our time with Avalon Hospice. There was our nurse, Carole. She was Dave's nurse all night, and she was like a guardian angel. She continually came in and out of the room to help us and bring us pillows, blankets, or anything she could to make us comfortable. After his death, I said I wouldn't go back, but I found myself drawn to Avalon Hospice. I feel good about volunteering here, because it's making a difference in their life, and I know it's making others - the patients and their families - feel good, too. I know if I start to get down, I can call on the staff and say, "I need help!" and someone's there for me. I really feel like my experiences can help other people while helping me to heal, too. "
